THEN
From: Sacramento, California
Internship: Therapy Assistant at the Dolphin Human Therapy Program
Location: Key Largo, Florida
When: June-July 2003
The Experience:
I worked with special needs children. It was an amazing experience especially when I worked closely with dolphins. I saw what the amazing dolphins could do as reinforcement for the children and therapy.
I had three therapy sessions everyday. I assisted the therapist with the therapy sessions. Children came for 2 or 3 weeks to receive therapy for their needs. I saw those children succeed and improve in different ways. It was amazing. It was something I couldn't believe until I saw with my own eyes. The children were adorable and wanted the best for themselves. I also got the chance to work with their siblings and parents. Once a week, we would have a picnic with the families. I also got the chance to swim with the dolphins.
NOW
What are you doing now: taking time off, working, and/or going to school? I have been working as an elementary boys' counselor at California School for the Deaf, Fremont for two years now
Do you enjoy working and/or going to school? I love my job so much. The boys are all energetic, just like me. Everyday I have fun teaching, helping and taking care of them.
Do you think your FCS major or your internship benefits you now? Yes, it definitely benefits me now. Many things I learned in classrooms and from experiences during my internship made it easier for me and increased my confidence when it comes to working with children. Of course, I am still learning and having a blast of a time.
What is your advice for future FCS majors/minors? Learn as much as you can and you will be able to bring the best out of yourself with children. HAVE FUN!
