THEN
From: Newfoundland, Canada
Internship: Counselor in Training Supervisor at Lions Camp Merrick
Location: Najomey, Maryland
When: Summer of 2003
The Experience:
I was a supervisor of the Counselors in Training during the summer of 2003. My responsibilities were to make sure they did their tasks and followed the rules. I had meetings with them two to three times a week to follow up what they learned in the past week and to answer their questions. I also came up with activities such as role playing (ex: me as a camper and the CITs as themselves) to see how they reacted in different situations. I really enjoyed my internship experience as a supervisor for the counselors in training.
NOW
What are you doing now: taking time off, working, and/or going to school? I am currently working full time as a Residence Team Leader at Walden School.
Do you enjoy working and/or going to school? I love my job. I have been here for almost three years.
Do you think your FCS major or your internship benefits you now? Yes, it did. FCS classes taught me how to be creative, I learned about kids' behaviors, nutrition, laws, and the list goes on. The internship benefited me a lot; it showed me that I actually enjoyed working with children, so FCS was a good choice for me.
What is your advice for future FCS majors/minors? Study hard, be sure that you actually do enjoy working with infants/children/teenagers and if so, then this major/minor might be just right for you!
